Two languages

I speak English and Mandarin. At a lot of weddings, that matters more than any camera.

When the grandparents speak Mandarin and the groomsmen speak English, someone has to direct the family photos in both. When the tea ceremony runs to its own order, someone has to know what comes next. This guide is for couples planning a Chinese or bilingual wedding in Melbourne.

By Jiaxi Wang, an editorial wedding photographer and videographer in Melbourne. I photograph fashion-forward, design-led and intimate weddings on digital, 35mm, 120 and Super 8 film. Updated November 2026.

01 · Family

Directing in both

Family photos are where language makes the biggest difference. I call groups in Mandarin and English, so older relatives are not left guessing where to stand. It is faster, and the photographs are warmer, because nobody is confused.

我会用中文和英文指导合影,长辈不会因为语言而紧张。

02 · Traditions

The tea ceremony

I know the order of a tea ceremony, so I am in the right place before each moment happens. Red envelopes, the bow to parents, the first cup handed over. These are fast and they do not repeat.

I travelled to Northeast China to photograph Y and D’s wedding, a tea ceremony, a car to the park in traditional dress, firecrackers at the hotel entrance, and a ceremony in a white dress later that day.

03 · Two outfits

Qipao, xiuhe and a white dress

Many Chinese weddings have two or three outfit changes. I plan the timeline so each outfit gets its own portraits in good light, not just a few frames in a corridor.

04 · Melbourne

Chinese weddings in Melbourne

In Melbourne I photograph Chinese and bilingual weddings at registry offices, city venues and in the country. Many couples start with a civil ceremony at the Old Treasury Building, then hold a tea ceremony and banquet with family. Pre-wedding photos in Chinatown are popular too.
