Y & D

Under the same sky.

Y was born in northeast China. D was born in Montana.

Thousands of kilometres apart, they grew up on almost the same latitude. Similar skies, the same turning seasons.

Their paths crossed in Europe. Eventually, they decided to spend the rest of their lives together.

They came back to Y’s hometown to marry on 6 October 2026, with family and friends around them, and honoured her roots with a traditional Chinese ceremony.

One of my favourite moments came when the celebrations were almost over.

A woman came up to Y and asked if she could take some of the leftover food. She ran a rescue shelter for stray dogs, and was always looking for food for them.

Before she could explain further, Y said yes, of course. She asked about the shelter, and promised to visit and support it after the wedding.

The woman was visibly moved. She was used to explaining herself, perhaps to being turned away. Instead, she was understood straight away.

They held each other’s arms, both with tears in their eyes.

Y told her about Tutu, the dog she and D adopted from China while they were living in Europe. Tutu is family now.

I think about that moment a lot.

Two people who grew up on opposite sides of the world found each other. On their wedding day, in a small moment no one planned, they reminded me that love is also in the way we treat the world around us.

What a way to begin a life together.
