Winter in the valley

Winter weddings in the Yarra Valley are underrated. The light is lower all day, the crowds are smaller, and the hills turn green after the rain.

I photographed Kyra and Joey at The Little Vineyard in Chirnside Park on 2 August 2026. Clear skies and a low sun through the gums. This guide covers what I tell couples planning a Yarra Valley winter wedding.

01 · Light

Why winter works

In summer the sun is high for most of the day, and the best light comes late. In winter it sits low from early afternoon. That means soft, side-lit portraits are possible for longer, and the ceremony itself often gets good light.

The trade is time. Sunset in the Yarra Valley in June and July is around five, so the day needs to start earlier. Plan portraits for three to four in the afternoon and keep the reception indoors.

02 · Weather

Planning for rain

A winter wedding needs a wet-weather plan, even on a forecast of sun. Ask your venue where the ceremony moves if it rains, and walk that space before the day. Covered verandas, big windows and doorways all photograph well. Clear umbrellas are worth having in the car.

Cold matters as much as rain. Coats for the bridal party, a wrap for the bride between photos, and somewhere warm to stand between family groups make the photographs look relaxed instead of shivering.

03 · Venues

Yarra Valley venues

The Yarra Valley has wineries, farm venues and smaller vineyards close to the city. The Little Vineyard is in Chirnside Park, at the edge of the valley, so guests from Melbourne do not face a long drive. Kyra and Joey had their ceremony on the lawn under an arbour of white cloth and bright flowers, and festoon lights once it got dark.

When you choose a winter venue, look for three things. A ceremony space with a covered fallback. Somewhere close for portraits so you are not walking far in the cold. And an indoor reception room with enough window light for the first hour.

04 · Coverage

How much coverage

Because winter days are shorter, six hours is often enough, from getting ready to the first dance. If the reception runs late and you want the speeches and the dance floor, eight hours is safer. With video, the documentary film records your vows and speeches with proper audio.

Questions

Winter wedding questions

Do you photograph weddings in the Yarra Valley?
Yes. Yarra Valley weddings are within easy reach of Melbourne. A travel fee applies beyond 20 km of Collingwood and is quoted with your package.

Is winter a good time for wedding photos?
Yes. Low sun gives soft light for longer, the valley is green, and venues are quieter. Plan around an earlier sunset.

What if it rains?
We plan a covered option with your venue before the day. Rain often makes the best photographs of the whole wedding.

Can you shoot film in winter?
Yes. I choose the film stock on the day for the light and the mood.
