I work from Collingwood. The inner north is where my film is developed, so city weddings here are close to home.
An inner-city wedding gives you something the country cannot. Texture. Painted walls, bluestone lanes, columns, tram lines and stone steps, all within a short walk. This guide covers how to plan one.
By Jiaxi Wang, an editorial wedding photographer and videographer in Melbourne. I photograph fashion-forward, design-led and intimate weddings on digital, 35mm, 120 and Super 8 film. Updated November 2026.
Collingwood and Fitzroy have small venues that work like studios. White walls, high ceilings, big windows, room for a stylist to build something. Sena and Alec started at Eden in Collingwood, in a room called the garden, pale stone, greenery and a white curtain for a backdrop.
A space like that lets you control the light and the look before you step outside. It suits couples who care about styling, fashion-led outfits and details like gloves, lace and florals.
After the venue, the city does the rest. Within a few minutes you can have a painted laneway, a quiet street with trees, and the stone steps and columns of the old buildings in the centre. I plan a short route before the day so we are not searching.
City portraits work best with a little time and a little direction. I will tell you where to stand and what to do with your hands, then step back and let the street move around you.
Inner-city weddings move between places, so build in travel. Ten minutes in a car in Collingwood can be thirty on a Saturday afternoon. Keep portraits close to the venue or the reception, and plan one location, not five.
Winter works well in the city. Stone and brick look good in soft grey light, and you are never far from somewhere warm. Sena and Alec married on 22 June, midwinter, and the cold gave the photographs their mood.
Inner-city weddings suit film. Grain, texture and contrast sit naturally with bluestone and brick. I shoot digital and film at every wedding, and Super 8 is available as an extra for a short, warm film of the day.

Do you charge travel for Collingwood or the city?
No. There is no travel fee within 20 km of Collingwood, which covers the city and the inner suburbs.
Can we do portraits in laneways?
Yes. Laneways are public, and most are easy to work in. We go early or pick quieter lanes to avoid crowds.
Are inner-city weddings good for small guest lists?
Yes. Small venues and short walks suit 20 to 60 guests well.
Do you speak Mandarin?
Yes. 我也会说中文。
